Mauve was one of the leading Dutch painters during the later half of the 19th century. His early artistic training was in the studios of Pieter Frederik van Os and later Wouterus Verschuur. His paintings shared an affinity with the works of the Barbizon artists in France. However, unlike Millet, who depicted the stuggle between man and nature, Mauve emphasized their bond.
In 1881 the young Vincent van Gogh enrolled as a workshop assistant in Mauve's atelier, and was the only assistant Mauve ever employed. Van Gogh was a cousin of Mauve's wife, and he turned to Mauve for instruction when he moved to the Hague to become a painter. Mauve's influence on Van Gogh is evident in his choice of themes of diggers, potato harvesters and wood merchants. Far more famous in his lifetime than his younger relative, Mauve's works were much in demand and were internationally acclaimed.
