DATED SECOND YEAR OF QIANLONG (1737) AND OF THE PERIOD


Carved to the top with a border of stylized C-scrolls, the rectangular well encircled by a twisting ribbon motif, the back with a sunken panel containing a poem in praise of the inkstone signed and dated by the carver Xintian Ren followed by two seals Huang and Ren, the sides a related inscription signed Luyan, Lin Ji and his seal and with two other seals Shiyan Huatushu (Illustrated book of Inkstones)--5 5/8in. Lot Essay

Huang Ren (1683-1768), from Fujian province, a famous Guangdong official, a juren of the Kangxi period, was a convivial character who was renowned for his humour and his love of guests and parties. He was a well-known collector, who was obsessed by inkstones and adopted the name "Mr. Ten Inkstones". He was also noted as a calligrapher.
