A LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO)

Decorated on the exterior with rectangular panels rimmed in silver between recessed borders of foliate scroll in gold and silver hiramaki-e, the large cover panel designed with a landscape of hills, pavilions and tea houses, a river and trees in gold takamaki-e with embellishments of nashiji, okibirame, rogin, uchikomi and hiramaki-e, some of the pine needles and chrysanthemums inlaid in silver and four camellia blossoms of inlaid coral, the sky area gyobu nashiji; the side panels of the lid and the lower box continued rocks, sky and clouds and the base nashiji; the underside of the lid designed in low gold relief with extensive okibirame with pine beaches and waves, with a gray and a black horse grazing on the shore, the waves continued on the lower interior of the box and on the removable implement tray, undersides nashiji; fitted with an inkstone lacquered on the base in nashiji, a gilt-silver paper pricker, ink stick holder, paper knife and two brushes contained in nashiji cases lacquered in gold hiramaki-e with rafts and fitted with elaborate mounts of shakudo and gilt, and with a soft-metal mizuire cast as a raft on waves--10 x 9 x 1¾in.
