A LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO)

Designed in Rimpa style in gold takamaki-e, inlaid mother-of-pearl and soft-metal simulating pewter on a fundame ground with hydrangeas and rippling water and a phrase from a poem, the underside of the lid patterned with waves, a 'pewter' sandbar and additional hydrangeas on a triangular shoreline outlined in mother-of-pearl, the lower section of the box repeating the waves and sandbar and moulded with a well for paper knife, inkstone and mizuire--10 1/8 x 9 1/8 x 2in. (25.7 x 23.3 x 5.2cm.)
