A FAN-SHAPED WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO)

Constructed in two parts, the upper compartment fitted with an inkstone, silver mizuire cast as two conjoined plum blossoms and with two brushes, silver paper knife and silver paper pricker in nashiji cases, the lid designed in lustrous gold and silver hiramaki-e, takamaki-e and togidashi enriched by mura-nashiji, okibirame and uchikomi as a partially open fan patterned with a No actor in mask and elaborate headdress, pines and flowering plum, the sticks of the fan placed on a backdrop of maples floating on a stream which continues, with additional plums and fans, on the sides of the box; the underside of the lid decorated with a partly unrolled scroll, staff and bag in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, the scroll mounts gold and red togidashi and aogai and the scroll ends inlaid coral, the ground nashiji as are the risers and interior of the rest of the box, and open lower storage compartment; storage box signed Byokinshi Nanyo and sealed Nanyo--11¼ x 8¼ x 3 7/8in.
