A LARGE LACQUER PLAQUE
(20th century), attributed to Heian Zohiko

The large plaque of rectangular shape lacquered in black, gold and silver with a carp leaping from a foaming wave toward slender hanging cherry boughs, the carp executed in takamaki-e and togidashi with an inlaid mother-of-pearl eye, the waves similar though in lower relief and inlaid with three mother-of-pearl bubbles of foam, the cherry branches also raised in low relief and rendered in gold and silver with togidashi details, the ground black applied with minute pieces of gold and silver and togidashi, enclosed within a silver lacquered-wood frame decorated in low relief with leaves, in wood storage box inscribed Zohiko saku (made by Zohiko)--including frame 25¼ x 19 5/8in. (64.2 x 49.7cm.)
