Lot Essay

These porcelain jue may be based on undecorated white-glazed porcelain examples of Yongle (1403-24) date, such as one excavated from Zhushan, Jingdezhen, and illustrated by Christine Lau, "The Porcelains of Jingdezhen", Colloquies on Art & Archaeology in Asia, no. 16, Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London, 1992, p. 87, pl. 2. For an interesting Qianlong comparison, see the bronze jue of somewhat similar shape cast with the same decorative band, also bearing a Qianlong seal mark on the base of the bowl, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated by Rose Kerr, Later Chinese Bronzes, London, 1990, fig. 19, p. 33
