A PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE LOTUS-FORM LIBATION CUPS
DATED TO THE 34TH YEAR OF THE REIGN OF GUANGXU, CORRESPONDING TO 1907, AND OF THE PERIOD

Each cup molded and painted in shades of opaque pink as a lotus blossom, pierced at one end of the interior with an aperture which connects to the lime-green stem-form spout painted in black with stippling and a dated inscription; together with a pair of doucai saucer dishes, Daoguang seal marks in underglaze blue and of the period, each decorated on the interior with a foliate medallion of conjoined frond-like C-scrolls and on the exterior with detached, stylized foliate motifs, in green, yellow and pale aubergine glaze and iron red, all within double blue line borders
Cups 7¾in. (19.7cm.) long, wood stands, box; dishes 8¼in. (20.9cm.) diam. (4)

Lot Essay

The inscription on the stem of the lotus cup may be translated, 'Souvenir cup of the Autumn Military exercises in the vicinity of Lake Tai in Anhui Province, thirty-fourth year of the reign of Guangxu (1907 AD) of the Great Qing dynasty'. A similar cup was included in the exhibition, Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing, from the Kwan Collection, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, August 13-September 25, 1983, Catalogue, p. 134, no. 141

A similar doucai dish with Daoguang mark was included in the exhibition of the Weishaupt Collection, From the Dragon's Treasure, Museum für Kunsthandwerk, Frankfurt am Main, June 25-August 30, 1987, Catalogue, p. 52, no. 58
