A LARGE EARTHENWARE VASE
meiji period (second half 19th century), signed satsuma yaki
Of ovoid form with exaggerated bulging shoulders, short neck and rolled lip, enamelled in colors and gilt on a cream crackled ground with a wide collar of chrysanthemum medallions, floral diamond patterns and confronted phoenixes within raised, moulded borders, below the collar the vase additionally decorated with pendants of linked chrysanthemums of red, white and gold, the foot encircled by a band of red and gold fretwork--14in. (35.2cm.) high
