A SET OF FOUR FINE REGENCY SILVER-GILT WINE COOLERS
LONDON, 1819, MAKER'S MARK OF PHILIP RUNDELL

In the form of the Warwick Vase, on square pedestal bases engraved front and back with a baronet's coat-of-arms and helm amid foliate scroll mantling, the sides applied with classical heads, grapevine and lion pelts on a matted ground, each with two bifurcated entwined vine handles, with removable collars and detachable liners all engraved with a crest, fully marked, the bases also stamped RUNDELL BRIDGE & RUNDELL AURIFICES REGIS ET PRINCIPIS WALLIAE LONDINI -- length over handles 14 in. (35.6 cm.)

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Sutton, for Sir Richard Sutton, 2nd Bt., born in 1798. He married on December 17, 1819, Mary Elizabeth, daughter of Benjamin Burton of Burton Hall, Co. Carlow. As one of the richest men in England, Sir Richard owned large estates in Nottinghamshire, Norfolk, Leicestershire and London. He devoted his life to sport and, although often solicited, he refused to stand for parliament. He died in 1855.
