A LATE GEORGE III MAHOGANY WRITING TABLE
LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY

The rounded rectangular top with gilt-tooled green leather surface , the frieze fitted with three drawers on solid trestles and reeded downswept legs with brass feet on casters - 28in. (71cm.) high, 44in. (112cm.) wide, 26½in. (67cm.) deep

Similar handles can be found on a Carlton House desk illustrated in R. Edwards and P. Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, revised edition, 1954, vol. III, p. 257, fig. 40. Another, probably by Gillows, is at Blair Castle, (see: A. Coleridge, 'Georgian Cabinet-Makers at Uppark, Sussex,' Connoisseur, November 1967, p. 79, fig. 13). Another with silver handles, made for the Prince of Wales' use at Carlton House and subsequently given to his private secretary, Admiral John Willett Payne, was sold anonymously at Sotheby's London, 25 April 1986, lot 73.
