Lot Essay

Tsuishu is carved red lacquer applied and dried in numerous successive coats to the desired thickness. A maker of carved lacquer is called as choshitsu-shi whereas a maker of gold lacquer is called a makie-shi.

The subject of the netsuke is the shishi, Buddhist lion, guarding the sacred jewel of Buddha.
