Lot Essay

The screw steamship Caracas was built in 1889 by Wm. Cramp & Sons Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Caracas sailed out of Wilmington Harbor until 1927.

Antonio Jacobsen painted nine images of the Caracas between 1884 and 1901. These nine are comprised of one sketch and eight oils; one of the oils is known to have been completed circa 1892, which is possibly the image represented here.
