In the form of a shield surmounted by an urn and draped with ribbon-tied laurel swags, the drop cast and chased in the form of acanthus leaves and berries, the signed circular white enamel dial with roman chapters and arabic minute numerals, finely engraved gilt leafy scroll and serpent hands, the signed movement, now with Brocot escapement, striking the hour and half-hour on bell by means of countwheel, third quarter 18th century--38in. (97cm.) long

Jean-Baptiste Du Tertre II, born 1715, maître 1735, died circa 1772.

The case of the present clock is unusually well modelled. It incorporates a number of design elements, notably the laurel swags, gadrooning, cording and general treatment of the foliage which are similar to published designs of Robert Osmond (see V.B., chapter 13).
