A LACQUERED WOOD WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO)
edo period (late 18th century), signed tatsuke takamasu saku
The rectangular writing box of deeply grooved wood lacquered on the cover in high relief with a large orange gourd and smaller gold gourd hanging from a vine with three leaves, one gold lacquer embellished with okibirame, one gold lacquer applied with aogai and one, in the lower right, gold lacquer accented with red lacquer and gold powder, a cicada on the large gourd also gold lacquer with wings of iridescent shell and thin lines of gold lacquer, the edges of the box accented with narrow bands of gyobu; the underside of the lid decorated in iro-e togidashi with cockscombs on a ground of roiro-nuri, hirame and nashiji which is continued in the lower interior; fitted there with a rectangular inkstone lacquered on the upper edge in fundame and with a metal mizuire cast in the form of a compressed gourd in a round metal saucer, signed in gold lacquer below the inkstone, base of the box roiro and hirame, inner rims fundame
