A LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO)
edo period (late 18th century) signed on the base of the inkstone koma koryu saku
Shaped in the form of a treasure ship (takarabune) and decorated on the lid in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e and inlays of silver, gilt-metal and coral with jewels, flowers and attributes of the Seven Gods of Good Fortune, who travel by this ship, the prow of the boat a silver phoenix and the mast of twisted silver and coral with a gilt-metal jewel terminal which supports the gold sail ornamented with a large phoenix in gold relief lacquer; fitted with an oblong inkstone lacquered on the sides in fundame and on the base in nashiji which is signed in gold lacquer as above, and a silver mizuire in the form of a flying crane in a soft-metal saucer; the interior, sides and base of the box nashiji, the rims silver
