JOHNSON, SAMUEL. Autograph manuscript fragment (possibly from his diary) consisting of a six-word quotation (headed "Porph." at top) in Greek apparently from the Neo-Platonist philosopher Porphyry, with a cryptic seven-word phrase in English below, written on the center panel (formed by folding) of a three-panelled small 4to leaf, soiled, a bit frayed at top edge, tipped to larger sheet. In an unidentified hand below Johnson's writing: "A MS. of Dr S. Johnson -- given me by Mrs. [Betsy] Barber -- May 18. 1804." With a further provenance note (in a later unidentified) hand tipped to the larger sheet: "From Dr. Harwood. Mrs. Barber was the widow of Francis Barber Dr. Johnsons faithful servant." (Milne)
