The slender cylinder well carved in low relief against the paler ground with a smiling luohan wearing a full robe, his large straw hat tied to the staff carried over his left shoulder, carved with the mark Wu Zhifan, with hardwood upper edge and base

Specialist note

Wu Zhifan, alias Lu Chen or Dong Hai, was a native of Jiading, Jiangsu, later settling in Tianjin. He was active during the reign of Kangxi (1662-1722) and is regarded as the first to carve in low relief on an almost plain background
