A KYO-SUKASHI TSUBA
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (1573-1600)

The round iron plate is pierced with a design of eight chrysanthemum blooms with flying birds connecting the flowers. The rim has fine iron bones. The ryo-hitsu are elongated in typical Kyoto style--height and width 7.9cm., thickness 4.75mm.

Lot Essay

This style of chrysanthemum design is not common in kyo-sukashi work. The shape of the ryo-hitsu was also used by the Umetada school of Kyoto.
