EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1700), SIGNED CHOSHU HAJI JU NOBUSHIGE SAKU

The round iron plate is pierced with a design of a spray of flowering peony in rounded carving and well-rendered detail. The design on the face is repeated on the reverse--height and width 8.3cm., thickness 5.25mm.

Lot Essay

From a dated example of his work we know that Okada Nobushige was 63 years of age in Kyoho 7 (1722). He was the son of Nobumasa, the third master of the Okada school. The finest of his guards show great care in their manufacture and he imparts a satin finish to them that is not seen again until the later 19th century.
