A KO-KINKO TSUBA
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (1573-1600)

The shakudo plate is formed of eight open fans with the hand-ends touching the center plate area. Each fan is decorated with a different design on both sides of the plate. Some are embellished with gold uttori-zogan--height 6.9cm., width 6.5cm., thickness 4mm.

Lot Essay

This is an uncommon design in ko-kinko work of this period. The open fan design is seen in the Edo period in both iron and soft metal plate. This type of tsuba served as the precursor for these later guards.
