Lot Essay

This type of late Muromachi sword fitting is described by various authors as ko-kinko, Ko-Goto and even tachikanagushi. The appropriate term depends on the elements which predominate. This example shows Goto quality nanako but the bold relief carving is more tachikanagushi style. The subject itself is not known on any other tsuba of the type or period, but during the Muromachi period it was common for the individual taste of the artist to prevail over the current fashion of the day.
