A KIRIKOMI MOKKO FORM TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1750)

The shakudo nanako plate is in tachi style and is of kirikomi mokko form. It has a raised rim and the edge is bevelled on each side to a flat center which has been gilded. The nanako ground has eight gold-covered kiri mon on each side. One crest of each side may be missing--height 7.4cm., width 7.2cm., thickness 5mm.

This type of tsuba was designed in the Heian and Kamakura periods to be mounted on tachi. These prototypes were larger and were not pierced with hitsu-ana. During the Edo period they were part of a mounting used only for formal occasions.
