A KONO SCHOOL KOZUKA
EDO PERIOD, DATED FIFTH MONTH, TEMPO 13 (1842), SIGNED HARUAKI WITH KAO

The plate is copper nanako of fine grain and has a relief inlay design of a tasselled brocade bag in gold and silver. The back has a two-column inscription of 32 Chinese characters and is signed and dated--length 9.7cm., thickness 6.5mm.

Double wood storage boxes. Inner box with inscription by Sato Kanzan, dated autumn, 1975.

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 17, dated December 12th, 1954; and a tokubetsu kicho certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 301, dated September 4th, 1973.

Lot Essay

Kono Haruaki (1787-1860) was a student of Yanagawa Naoharu (1750-?), from whom he derived his name. In 1830 he was given the honorific title Hogen by the Tokugawa bakufu. He was a great traveler and many of his art names were derived from the places he visited.
