A YOSHIMURA SCHOOL TSUBA
MEIJI ERA (1868-1912), SIGNED MASAHIRO, WITH KAO

The oval shakudo plate tapers slightly towards the edge and is decorated in high relief gold inlay with a rooster and two rice bales in a landscape; the reverse depicts a hen beside a stream. The surface is hammered with a stone (ishime) surface and the edge is polished--height 7.7cm., width 7.2cm., thickness at edge 3.5mm., greatest thickness of inlay 1.75cm.

Lot Essay

Little is known about this artist except that he was a member of the Yoshimura school and studied under Kagawa Katsuhiro (1852-1917) who in turn studied under Kano Natsuo (1828-1898).
