A SHINSHINTO EDO SUO KATO KATANA
EDO PERIOD, DATED 1861, SIGNED BOSHU IWAKUNI-NO-SHIN SEIRYUKEN MORITOSHI KORE-O TSUKURU

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and large point (o-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 3 sun, 2.5 bu (70.5cm); curvature (sori): torii-zori of 2.2cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.0cm.; carving (horimono): outside: dragon disputing a pearl (tamaoi-ryu) in the lower half of the blade, a maru-dome bo-hi ni tsure-hi above; inside: santotsukaken below bonji of Fudo Myo-o, all below maru-dome bo-hi ni tsure-hi.
Forging pattern (jihada): small wood grain approaching a 'pear-skin' pattern (ko-itame/nashiji).
Tempering pattern (hamon): gonome midare in ko-nie.
Point (boshi): small, rounded flame-brushed tip (ko-maru hakikake); inside: midare-komi.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): long (23.9cm.), tapering and unshortened (ubu); file marks (yasurime): new kiri-yasuri; end (nakagojiri): pronounced iriyamagata; holes (mekugi-ana): one; signature (katanamei): Boshu Iwakuni-no-shin Seiryuken Moritoshi kore-o tsukuru, dated Bunkyu gan-nen shinyu (kanoe-tori) roku-ju sai hori do saku (a 60-year old man in Bunkyu 1 [1861] also did the carving).

Shirasaya.

Koshirae comprising: a black ishime saya (damaged), mounted with an iron Higo kojiri; a tsuka mounted with a pair of gold and shakudo menuki formed as writing implements, with fuchi-kashira decorated in gold nunome with foliage.-- Length of koshirae
99.3cm.; length of tsuka 24.3cm. In poor condition.
