EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1855), SIGNED MINAMOTO MASAO
Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and large point (chu-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 7 sun, 7.5 bu (84.2cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.7cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.2cm.
Forging pattern (jihada): dense itame masame.
Tempering pattern (hamon): choji gonome midare in ko-nie with 'legs' (ashi), yo, 'swept sands' (sunagashi) and little kinsuji with very active nioi.
Point (boshi): midare-komi.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): slender and unshortened (ubu); file marks (yasurime): sujikai; end (nakagojiri): rounded (kurijiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two (one being a shinobi-ana); signature (katanamei): Minamoto Masao.
Shirasaya with attestation signed Kunzan (Homma Junji).
O-katana koshirae comprising: black lacquer kizami saya; a tsuka mounted with plain iron fittings; an iron Mito Shoami style tsuba carved and molded with clouds and mountains and pierced with a fireman's axe, unsigned; an iron wari-kogai decorated with a gilt fish in a silver stream.-- Length of koshirae 120.7cm; length of tsuka 30.8cm.; tsuba height 7.8cm., width 7.5cm., thickness 7mm.; length of wari-kogai 18.3cm. Old chips, splits and damages to the saya.

Accompanied by a tokubetsu kicho token certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 364110, dated Showa 53 (1978); and a koshu tokubetsu kicho token certificate issued by the N.B.T.H.K., no. 17663, dated Showa 53 (1978).
