Of oval form, on four paw feet headed by lion-heads, with acanthus scroll and anthemion reeded side handles, the gadrooned rim with acanthus and shell decoration at intervals, the domed cover with fluted band and surmounted by a Bishop's mitre finial, engraved front and back with a coat-of-arms and Bishop's mitre, marked under base, on cover and finial--length over handles 18 1/4in. Lot Essay

The arms are those of the Bishopric of Lincoln impaling those of Kaye, as borne by John Kaye, Bishop of Lincoln, translated to that see from Bristol. Before his elevation to the bench of bishops he had been Master of Christ's College, Cambridge. He died in 1852.
