A PAIR OF REGENCY SILVER SAUCE BOATS

In the Rococo style, each of boat-shaped form, the oval spreading base with elaborate rocaille and acanthus scroll decoration, the stem formed as a coiled snake, the body chased with flutes issuing from the sweeping rocaille and scroll back and with engraved rocaille, acanthus scroll and fishscale decoration between, the scroll handle draped with a sea-monster, with acanthus scroll wavy rim, engraved under the lip with a crest and coronet, marked on bodies--10 1/4in. (26cm.) long

Lot Essay

The crest and coronet are those of the Earls of Kenmare.

A pair of sauceboats from the same set was sold in these Rooms October 18, 1989, lot 163, and previously in the collection of Violet, Lady Beaumont and sold by Christie's, London, November 16, 1949, lot 129. They are copies of originals of 1764 in the Royal Collection, illustrated in E. Alfred Jones, The Gold and Silver of Windsor Castle, 1911, plate LXXXII.

A set of four by Storr of the same date is illustrated in N.M. Penzer, Paul Storr, 1771-1844, Silversmith and Goldsmith, 1954, p. 206, and a pair of 1812 is illustrated in Morrie A. Moss, The Lillian and Morrie Moss Collection of Paul Storr Silver, 1972, p.184. The latter was subsequently in the collection of Mrs John W. Christner and sold by Christie's, New York, June 7, 1977, lot 82. A pair of 1821 is in the Elizabeth B. Miles Collection, Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut. The same model was also used by Robert Garrard. A set of four by this maker, 1825, was sold by Sotheby's, London, November 128, 1965, lot 69.
