A HEIANJO STYLE TSUBA
MOMOYAMA PERIOD (CIRCA 1575)

The thick iron plate has its outer edge and rim formed as a twenty-eight petal chrysanthemum bloom. The area from the rim to the seppa-dai is covered, on each side, with a sheet of brass in four sections, carved as a double row of chrysanthemum petals--height 7.0cm., width 6.8cm., thickness 5.75mm.

Lot Essay

This unusual design concept, attributed in the past to the Jingo school, may have originated in Kyoto; as the shape of the hitsu-ana, seppa-dai, and boldness of the piece are characteristic of the Shoami school.
