A SENDAI STYLE TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850)

The rounded, trapezoidal-shaped iron plate has an overall gold nunome pattern of pine trees which is repeated on the reverse. One hitsu-ana is plugged in shakudo and the plate has a shakudo rim cover--height 6.3cm., width 5.5cm., thickness 5.5mm.

Lot Essay

This style of overall nunome pattern is found on the work of the Awa Shoami school, various Higo schools, and in Sendai schools. Such a late example as this would seem to be the work of the Sendai school.
