A SENDAI STYLE TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1800)
The thin, irregularly shaped iron plate has a delicate, raised rim. The web is overlaid with gold damascene (nunome) in a design of a dragon amidst clouds. The sword (ken) in the tail of the dragon is silver. The reverse is similarly decorated with part of the dragon's body, one of its legs, and clouds. The kogai hitsu-ana is plugged with stone-finished lead--height 6.9cm., width 6.0cm., thickness 2.5mm.
