AN UCHIKOSHI SCHOOL TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1800), SIGNED HIROTOSHI WITH KAO

The oval shibuichi plate has a polished surface and is decorated in very high relief with two herons, one in gold and shakudo, and the other in silver and shakudo, wading in a stream beside plants of gold and shakudo. The reverse is similarly decorated--height 7.6cm., width 7.1cm., thickness 4.5mm.

Uchikoshi Hirotoshi (S. Hara reads this name as Hironaga) (fl. 1810) was a student of Yatabe (Mito) Tsuju (died 1768) and of Tamagawa Yoshitoshi (fl. 1775). He lived at Mito and later moved to the Kanda district of the present Tokyo.
