Lot Essay

Marukawa Hiroyoshi was a student of Uchikoshi Hirotoshi (fl. 1810), and he worked at Mito in Hitachi Province. There are dated examples of his work for the years 1841 and 1842. The subject of this tsuba was one of his favorite designs. See Compton sale part I, lot 206 for a slightly larger example.
