NAMBOKUCHO PERIOD (CIRCA 1350), SIGNED NAGAMITSU, ATTRIBUTED TO NAGAMITSU III

Configuration (sugata): with longitudinal ridge line (shinogi-zukuri), shallow peaked back (iori-mune) and small point (ko-kissaki); length (nagasa): 2 shaku, 1 sun, 6 bu (65.5cm.); curvature (sori): koshi-zori of 1.5cm.; increase in width of blade (fumbari): 1.1cm.; carving (horimono): bonji on the ura shinogi-ji.
Forging pattern (jihada): wood and burl grains (itame mokume).
Tempering pattern (hamon): very small clove pattern (ko-choji) with irregular outlines (midare); just above the hamon is faint, scattered, cloud-like tempering (tobiyaki).
Point (boshi): Indistinct.
Tang (nakago). Shape (keitai): wide, curved, shortened (suriage) and with a moist, brown patina; file marks (yasurime): slanted (katte-sagari); end (nakagojiri): rounded (kiri-jiri); holes (mekugi-ana): two (one double plugged); signature (tachimei): Nagamitsu.
