Strassburg: Johannes Grüninger 1514. Folio, 270 x 200 mm. (10 5/8 x 7 7/8 in.), nineteenth-century dark brown morocco, gilt arms of William Stirling-Maxwell at center of upper covers, his gilt monogram on lower cover, spine gilt-lettered, turn-ins gilt, g.e., the front pastedown endpaper with his large ex-libris printed in red and black, extremities rubbed, upper inner hinge cracked, repaired 6-inch tears to fols. F3 and F4, a few minor marginal repairs, occasional small stains or minor discoloration, some of the rubrication reinforced (or supplied) with modern coloring, washed and pressed.
FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, Gothic type, double column, 18 large woodcuts, including title woodcut signed with Geiler von Keisersberg's monogram ("DIK") and 14 full-page cuts, approximately 25 smaller woodcuts in the text, woodcut initials.
