MEIJI PERIOD (19TH CENTURY), SIGNED KAJIKAWA AND SHIBAYAMA

Of oval form inlaid in ivory, horn, mother of pearl, soft metal and colored lacquer with a caparisoned elephant supporting an immense lotus flower reserved on a kinji ground lacquered in relief with a pine tree, grasses and rocks, the reverse decorated in further takamaki-e with three Chinese boys cavorting in the landscape, their faces and hands inlaid in ivory, the interior cases nashiji- 3 1/2 in. (8.9 cm.) long, chips at joins of cases, slight inlay loss
