Of rectangular shape, decorated on the lid in gold, red, silver and black lacquer with three books, one opened to a double page illustration of two poets and two books closed, one labelled Ise monogatari and the Manyoshu, set at angles on a ground of roiro sprinkled lavishly with nashiji, the interior also roiro-nuri covered with nashiji; fitted with an inkstone, gilt metal mizuire, inkstick and brush- 9 5/8 x 8 5/8 x 1 3/4 in. (24.4 x 21.9 x 4.5 cm.), some surface nicks, small cracks and rubbing
