A LACQUER SUZURIBAKO
MEIJI PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)

The rectangular writing box with notched corners decorated in gold takamaki-e with stands of pines and Chinese characters beneath a large silver lacquer moon, the ground beneath the pines gold and the sky roiro-nuri, the design continued on the sides of the box and the edges embellished with a line of minute aogai squares applied in a checker pattern, the underside of the lid and the interior of the box lacquered with large powdery squares of gold and silver laid at angles on a rich nashiji ground, fitted with a metal mizuire, ink stone and ink stick- 8 1/2 x 7 1/8 x 1 1/2 in. (21.5 x 18.2 x 3.7 cm.)
