Lot Essay

This fraktur is related to a second Geburts und Taufschein recorded in the Winterthur Library: Decorative Arts Photographic Collection, (NEH 625, 4a - 5a), made for Catherina Mast in 1822. Although the artist remains unknown, both examples exhibit the same layout and design as well as a comparable handling of the material and lettering; both examples are also numbered in a similar manner at the lower right corner of the page. In each, both Maria Anna Schwartz and Catherina Mast were born in Tinnicum Township, Bucks County. The two children were probably related as well as the maiden name of Maria Anna Scwartz's mother was Mast, as were her baptismal witnesses.
