IN THE STYLE OF GIOVANNI MARIA

Of cardinal's hat form, the well painted with an allegorical group of Charity and inscribed 'CARITAS' enclosed within a chain surround, the side of the well with a white scollwork band on a pale blue ground, the sloping rim painted a candelieri and with the arms of Pope Julius II della Rovere, bearing the date 1522 on four cartouches, the underside with alternating bands of concentric circles in yellow and blue, with a variety of old collection labels including a Lehman label inscribed 'c 128' and a French customs stamp (rim broken in four pieces and repaired from 7 o'clock to 11 o'clock) ----- 10¾in. Lot Essay

The present bowl may be the work of Ferruccio Mengaroni, a copyist active in Pesaro during the late 19th/early 20th century.

Sold with thermoluminescence certificate 581e75 dated 4 August 1992 from the Research Labroatory for Archaeology and the History of Art, Oxford University confirming that the sample tested (taken from the foot rim) was last fired less than 100 years ago.
