A LARGE FOXHUNTING PUNCH BOWL
CIRCA 1785

Richly decorated in Mandarin palette enamels with two large panels of English foxhunting scenes showing the meet gathering and at full cry, the cell diaper pattern ground with large Mandarin palette cartouches of Chinese figures swimming, the interior decorated in the center with a single horseman and his hounds below a deep border of numerous landscape and figural cartouches with gilt filigree, purple scale, cell diaper, feathery scrolls and bats (three cracks, wear to interior panel)--16in. (40.7cm.) diam.

Hervouet and Bruneau, op. cit., p. 77, illustrate a slightly earlier bowl which must have shared an original English print source with this bowl and the other Mandarin palette bowls known in this pattern.
