Lot Essay

"Dodgson and Liddon were at Christ Church together for nearly their whole lives, and although they never got beyond calling each other by their surnames, seem to have appreciated one another's company in a sincere if rather formal way. Certainly during the Long Vacation of 1867 these two went for a tour through Germany and Poland to Russia, and home by way of France. This was Dodgson's only foreign tour, and he recorded it very carefully in his diary, both amusing details and serious impressions."--Green, Roger Lancelyn. The Story of Lewis Carroll. (New York, 1955), p. 39.
