Lot Essay

Park Saeng-Kwang was born in Jin-Ju in South Kyong Sang Province. In 1920 he went to Kyoto and studied for three years at the art school of Tachikawa Seiun. In 1923 he entered the Kyoto Municipal School of Art and studied Japanese-style painting under Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942). His work was exhibited at the "2nd Choson" art exhibition in Korea. In 1924 he graduated from Jin-Ju Agricultural School. He studied with Ochiai Rofu (1895-1937) in 1926 and with Gokura Chiroku (1887- ? ) in 1928. In 1932 he had a one-person exhibition at Ginza Kanebo in Tokyo. In 1940 his painting entitled "A house of nine birds" was shown in the "26th Japanese Art Academy" exhibition. In 1963 he won the South Kyong Sang Province Cultural Prize in Korea. He showed his work at the exhibition, "Korean Contemporary Artists", sponsored by the Choson Daily News in 1965.

During the period 1968-74 he lectured in the painting department of Hong Ik University in Seoul. In 1973 his paintings were shown in the "Korean Contemporary Art" exhibition sponsored by the National Museum of Modern Art in Seoul. Park Saeng-Kwang left Korea in 1974 and went to Tokyo where he became a member of the Japanese Art Academy. One of his paintings, "A white rhythm", was exhibited in the Academy's 59th exhibition in 1974. In 1975 he had three one-person exhibitions in Japan: one at the Saikodo Gallery, one at the Tokyo branch of the Korean Commerical Bank, and one at the Korean Cultural Center in Tokyo.

In 1977 the artist had a one-person exhibition at the Jin Gallery in Seoul. In 1981 he had another solo exhibition at the Baek Sang Memorial Hall in Seoul, and his work was represented in an exhibition entitled "Korea and Germany" in Bonn, Germany the same year. In 1982 he traveled to France and more exhibitions followed, one at the National Museum of Modern Art in Seoul in 1983 entitled "Korean and Chinese Contemporary Western Painting", and a solo exhibition at the Fine Art Hall in Seoul in 1984. In 1985 his work was included in an invitational exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris. Park Saeng-Kwang won the Korean Order of Cultural Merit silver prize in 1985.
