Lot Essay

Byun Shi-Ji studied in the Western-style painting division at the Osaka Art School in Japan. In 1948 he won first prize at the 34th "Kwang Pung" exhibition and he had thirty one-man shows in Korea and Japan during the years 1949-90. In 1978 he exhibited in Korea with his wife, Lee Hak Sook, who is also a painter. He participated in the "Modern Art" exhibitions at the National Museum of Modern Art in Seoul from 1983 through 1990. In the period 1981-90 Byun Shi-Ji received the Cheju Province Cultural Award, and three books about his work were published: Byun Shi-Ji, European Trip, and Cheju Province Landscapes.
