A DARANI AND GILT BRONZE CONTAINER
MUROMACHI PERIOD (15TH/16TH CENTURY)
A miniature darani (magic spell) in scroll form, gold ink on blue paper, of the Issaijoraishin Himitsuzenshin sharihokyoin Darani, inscribed in Siddham, a form of Indian script, contained within the pierced middle cylinder of the container; the container of gilt bronze resting on two quatrefoil plinths cast on the sides with lotus scroll and a foliate band, rising to a fluted lotiform section and a smaller quatrefoil plinth matching the base, these stepped lower sections supporting the lotus bud-form cup for the sutra cylinder cast with openwork lotus scroll, the slightly domed cover cast with a foliate rim and bud knop and ornamented with swirling clouds, the lid twists and removes from the locked position as does the cylinder, open at both ends- 3 1/16 in. (7.7 cm.) high, break in bronze one end of cylinder, base plinths slightly askew
