Sicily, Syracuse (c.480-470 BC), Silver Decadrachm by the Demareteion master, 42.8 gms., slow quadriga driven right by male charioteer, Nike flying right above crowning horses, in exergue lion running right, rev. head of Arethusa right wearing olive-wreath, earring and necklace, hair waved at front and dressed in krobylos with long lock behind ear, nimbus, four dolphins and /KSYRAKOSION/k around (Boehringer 378, same dies; Schwabacher p. 25, 7, R5/V3; Hunt I, lot 64, same dies), oval planchet with area of weakness at 6 o'clock on both obverse and reverse, otherwise fine with all major details clear, the metal good and surfaces superior to those of the Hunt specimen, an attractive example of one of the most beautiful and evocative of all ancient coins
