Lot Essay

Wolf was born in Germany where he began drawing birds and mammals from a very early age. He came to England in 1848 and worked on a great number of books on natural history subjects, the most important being John Gould's, The Birds of Great Britain, many of the original drawings for which were sold in these Rooms, see the catalogue for the sale of The Godman Collection of watercolours for John Goulds, The Birds of Great Britain, 4 October 1994.
One of the best known publications Wolf illustrated was Daniel Giraud Elliot's The Life and Habits of Wild Animals, which was published in 1874 a year after this watercolour was executed
