Lot Essay

Stylistic features of this table, such as the shell and bellflower carving, relate to objects attributed to the shop of John Elliot of Philadelphia (active 1753-17-0). A similar card table, with related carving and beaded rear stiles, is in the Garvan collection at Yale (see David L. Barquist, American Tables and Looking Glasses (New Haven, CT, 1992), pp. 170-172, fig. 76). Both these tables were in the Reifsnyder collection and sold at auction in 1929 (Anderson Art Galleries, The Reifsnyder Collection, lots 632 and 641).
