MAKER'S MARK OF JOHN MOULINAR, NEW YORK, CIRCA 1750

Tapering cylindrical, applied with a band of cut-card leaves above the molded rim foot, the front engraved with two ships withan armorial shield enclosing a sailing ship and surmounted by a sailing ship crest, all within foliate scroll mantling, the side engraved with initials AV within scrolls, the scroll handle applied with a twisted rattail below an applied drop engraved with stylized leaves and cross-hatching and with oval terminal engraved with initials I over EW within scrolls, the hinged flat domed cover with corkscrew thumbpiece, the crenellated lip engraved with hatchwork, the cover set with a Louis XV silver ecu 1747, mint of Bordeaux, marked on base I.M., Buhler & Hood mark 651, 653, double struck--7 1/4in. long

Lot Essay

The arms (illustrated on front cover) are probably those of Wendell, for a descendant of Everett Wendell, a Dutch emigre who settled in Albany before 1642.
